What’s for dinner?
Many people are surprised when they find out that the monks eat almost all of their meals in silence. Okay, maybe they are just surprised to hear that I do not talk during meals. My experience has been that even when you are not talking with the people around you at meals, there is still a strong sense of fraternity and community. It allows for a reflective and enjoyable period of time where we can take a break from having to create conversation, and nourish our bodies and spirits. St. Benedict has several chapters dedicated to topics such as, “Kitchen Servers of the Week,” “The Reader for the Week,” and “The Proper Amount of Food and Drink.”
This video will explain a bit about some of the practices during mealtime in the monastery at Conception Abbey.
